Kansas high school state bowling results: Wichita-area features several champions

For the first time in state history, there were three separate state tournaments for boys and girls bowling, hosted at Bowlero Northrock in Wichita this week.

With plenty of Wichita-area winners, here’s a full recap:

6A boys: Derby claims another team state title

The Derby boys bowling team won the second Class 6A team state championship in program history on Thursday with a winning score of 3,722, which cleared the field by more than 130 pins.

After settling for a seventh-place finish at last year’s state tournament with no individual medalists, the Panthers roared back this spring with a title-winning performance that included three top-20 finishes in junior Evan Clark (720, third), junior Dawson Baumgartner (690, seventh) and junior Tyler Huffman (653, 16th).

Derby’s depth was on full display, as the scoring lineup was rounded out by Eli Gibbs (636), Cash Carns (633) and Michael Stanger (628), as all six bowlers finished top-35 and with series greater than 625.

Olathe North’s Joseph Ouellette won individual medalist honors with a 737 series, while other area medalists included Campus’ Brandon Andino-Umana (681, 10th) and Wichita South’s Braden Morrow (681, 11th).

6A girls: Campus’ dynasty continues, while Northwest has surprise winner

After winning back-to-back titles in 2015 and 2016 and then four straight from 2018-21, the Campus girls bowling team may have just begun a new title run by winning the 6A crown on Wednesday.

After finishing third in 2022 and second last year, the Colts returned on top of the team standings with a score of 3,255 to win the 6A title by more than 160 pins.

Campus was led by three individual medalists in senior Allie Gentry (657, fourth), sophomore Riley Emerson (631, seventh) and senior McKenzie Goupil (577, 18th). It was the first career state medal for all three, as Gentry and Emerson both registered their season-best series at the state tournament.

The title-winning team by Campus also included sophomore Caitlynn Clough (548), senior McKenzie Craig (528) and freshman Angelina Moser (455).

Wichita Northwest junior Kalee Stockstill saved her best for last, rolling a season-high series of 705 pins to win the individual medal honors at the 6A state tournament on Thursday.

It was a major improvement from Stockstill, whose previous series high this season was 576 pins. But she busted through that with a season-high game of 256 to open the state tournament, then followed through with games of 235 and 214 to clear the field by 42 pins.

Defending champion Morgan Henning of Derby registered a top-10 finish with a series of 626 to place eighth, while other individual medalists from the area included East’s Bella Lumbreras (663, second), Heights’ Tai Level (654, fifth) and Northwest’s Avery Schippers (565, 20th).

5A: Goddard Eisenhower senior goes out on top with 5A girls crown

Eisenhower senior Olyvia Choura won the individual medalist honors at the 5A girls state tournament with a series of 674 to clear the field by 32 pins.

Choura is no stranger to success, as Friday’s gold medal marked her third straight top-15 finish at the state tournament. She opened the tournament in rousing fashion with a 278 game, then followed with two straight games of 198 to close out her second-highest series of the season.

Other area medalists in the 5A girls state tournament included Maize South’s Ava Kohlmeier (619, third), Bishop Carroll’s Anne Timmermeyer (579, eighth), Maize South’s Paige Schuler (562, 15th) and Andover Central’s Paighton Crumley (555, 16th).

Area medalists in the 5A boys state tournament included Goddard Eisenhower’s James Duty (677, fourth) and Miles Blue (650, 15th), Hutchinson’s Brody Ummel (674, fifth) and Jacob Bofink (635, 19th), Maize South’s William Winkelbauer (671, seventh) and Andover’s Trevor Formy-Duval (638, 17th).

Shawnee Heights won the 5A boys team title, while Kansas City Turner’s Rhett Ryman won individual honors with a 724 series.

4-1A boys: Wichita Trinity wins program’s first team state title

Behind three top-10 finishes, the Trinity Academy boys bowling team captured its first team state championship in program history.

After finishing runner-up by less than 50 pins at last year’s state tournament, the Knights reloaded with an almost entirely new lineup an won the inaugural 4-1A team title on Wednesday. Trinity’s team score of 3,377 cleared second-place Cheney by 167 pins. Ottawa’s Shane Circle won individual medalist honors with a 728 series.

Junior Justin Ritterbush rolled a season-best series of 649 to place sixth overall, while junior Croix Wright (645, seventh) and senior Connor Jahn (639, eighth) were right behind him in the top 10. Jahn, who finished his career with two state medals, and Wright were the only returners from last season’s second-place team.

The rest of Trinity’s scoring lineup was rounded out by junior Charlie Carlson (566), junior Logan Milleman (548) and senior David Sems (533).

Cheney’s second-place team finish was powered by a pair of season-best performances that landed in the top-5 by junior Cameron Eastman (681, third) and freshman Andrew Phelps, who added 135 pins to his season-best score for a 649 series in taking fifth. The Cardinals also featured freshman Maddox Ayres (516), sophomore Riley Ayres (506), junior Garren Campbell (505) and junior Alex Jones (448).

Other area state medalists included Mulvane’s Kameron Blevins (657, fourth), McPherson’s Alex Wheat (626, 10th) and sophomore Jace Godwin (575, 20th), Buhler’s Malachi Willis (622, 11th), Circle’s John Swift (613, 12th), Hesston’s Tanner McAllister (610, 13th), Central Christian Academy’s Andrew Burchfield (593, 15th), Andale’s Connor Wilson (591, 16th), Grant May (577, 19th) and Dugan Tremple (575, 20th) and Independent’s Andrew Nelson (575, 20th).

4-1A girls: Buhler, Wichita Central come away with titles

The Buhler girls bowling team collected its third team state championship in program history, winning the inaugural 4-1A team title with a score of 2,907, clearing the field by more than 100 pins.

The Crusaders ran away with the title with three top-12 finishes, led by a trio of seniors in Teigan Nielsen (575, third), Kenzie Welch (555, eighth) and Sloane Adkins (521, 12th). Other members of the title team included Cheyann Geesling (423), Aubrey Ewing (370) and Eva Goertz (320).

Meanwhile, the tiny upstart program in Central Christian Academy thrived in its first appearance as a team in a state tournament. Bella Cunningham rolled a season-best series of 609 in taking home individual medalist honors by 30 pins and led the team to a runner-up finish to Buhler.

Cunningham was followed in the top five by teammate Alliyah Martin, who finished in fifth with a series of 566. Central’s scoring lineup was rounded out by Kara Hornbaker (454), Emma Pedersen (426), Taylin Cannaby (425) and Addison Brengman (402).

Other area medalists included Circle’s Brianna Devor (579, second) and Faith Brooks (477, 18th), Clearwater’s Ellie Weeks (567, fourth), Cheney’s Kylee Trego (533, ninth), Collegiate’s Caroline Kuglich (526, 10th) and Monica Bagai (494, 15th), McPherson’s Emma Shandy (500, 14th) and Brooke Henry (492, 16th) and Mulvane’s Olivia Blevins (467, 20th).
