Kensington Police launch new anti-drinking and driving campaign

Kensington Police are launching a new campaign to discourage drinking and driving — and it has nothing to do with Nickelback.

Two weeks ago, Kensington Police Const. Robb Hartlen posted a tongue-in-cheek message on its Facebook page threatening to play Nickelback in the back seat of the cruiser to anyone caught drinking and driving.

CBC — as well as other media from around the world — did the story and it quickly went viral. But when Nickelback became the brunt of jokes online — the story even became the source of sketches on Saturday Night Live and This Hour Has 22 Minutes — Hartlen removed the Facebook post and replaced it with an apology to Nickelback.

Tickets to 22 Minutes

On Thursday, Kensington Police announced a new campaign offering different incentives — including tickets to This Hour Has 22 Minutes — for not drinking and driving.

The department is encouraging people to use the social media hashtag #notsobernotdriving on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and say why they didn't drink and drive.

"It could be 'DD for the Christmas Party #notsobernotdriving,'" said Hartlen, or anything that "promotes the idea of being responsible and not getting behind the wheel."

As well as two seats to a live taping of This Hour Has 22 Minutes, prizes also include two tickets to a Toronto Maple Leafs game.

Hartlen said they are also trying to secure tickets to Saturday Night Live as another prize.

Hartlen said any organizations that want to donate prizes can contact the Kensington Police Department.

The campaign ends Jan. 2.
