'Kids love music': Playing for Change promotes music education

Playing for Change, with a chapter in Saskatchewan, provides support for music education. A fundraiser in Regina will go a long way to ensuring youngsters in the province and around the world have a chance to explore creativity through music.

About 30 musicians and dancers volunteered their talent and time to Playing for Change Day Saturday for an event at the Artful Dodger.

Gary Robins is project manager for the foundation's Saskatchewan chapter. He says all children should be exposed to music appreciation.

"Because music is participatory, music is engaging," Robins said. "Kids love music."

The goal of the fundraiser was $6,500. In addition to support music education abroad, money will also go to help Saskatchewan children access music programming.

Robins said there is a lot to be gained through learning about music.

"There's a spontaneity and an esteem-building aspect to doing music," he said.
