Killer granted day parole
A man who stabbed his wife to death 18 years ago on Portage Avenue in front of horrified bystanders has been granted day parole.
Bruce Stewner was sentenced to life in prison in 1995 for the killing.
As he stabbed her, Stewner told his wife Kelly that she deserved it.
Stewner was granted day parole last month, on Nov. 22.
As part of his release, he must report all intimate relationships and friendships with women, and any changes to those relationships, to his parole officer.
He is not allowed to buy, consume or even possess alcohol or drugs, other than prescribed medication.
Stewner must also follow a mental health treatment plan.
One prison assessment found Stewner was at a higher risk to re-offend violently in an intimate relationship.
Earlier this year, while in custody, Stewner remarried.
Stewner was convicted of second degree murder for the May 1994 killing of his wife, Kelly Lynn.
The couple had a fight and she left the vehicle.
He chased her and began stabbing her.
Witnesses yelled at him to stop, but Stewner continued to assault her and threatened those trying to stop him.
At the time, Kelly Lynn had a restraining order against her husband.
When the judge sentenced Stewner, he described the crime as one of the most vicious, brutal and violent stabbings he had seen.
