For the second straight year, the Los Angeles Lakers have picked up a bona fide superstar, last year signing LeBron James and this year agreeing to a trade that will land them Anthony Davis.

Like last year, that news has been met with the Lakers’ championship odds rocketing to the top of the NBA.

Lakers new favorites for 2020 NBA Finals

Shortly after news broke of the Davis trade, Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook oddsmaker Jeff Sherman released a new set of NBA championship odds.

The Lakers are now the clear favorites to hoist the Larry O’Brien Trophy at 3/1 odds. The Lakers were also the Westgate favorites just one day earlier at 9/2 odds, but the megadeal has now put some distance between them and the No. 2 Milwaukee Bucks.

That’s quite the ascension given that the Lakers opened as 20/1 long shots when odds were first released in early May. Since then, in addition to the Lakers’ big move, the previously favored Golden State Warriors crashed and burned, the Bucks came short of the Finals, the Boston Celtics appeared to have lost Kyrie Irving and the NBA Finals were won by a Toronto Raptors team that might lose its best player in Kawhi Leonard to free agency.

It’s hard to overstate how much has broken in the Lakers’ favor over the last month.

Of course, the Lakers were 7/2 favorites last year after landing James, so who knows what could still happen.
