Land near Sioux Lookout Airport open for development
SIOUX LOOKOUT – A 27-acre parcel of vacant land along Bigwood Lake represents big opportunities for developers, according to the Municipality of Sioux Lookout.
The municipality is inviting proposals for commercial and residential projects on the land, which is near Sioux Lookout Airport.
Proximity to the airport makes the site attractive for a hotel or other commercial development, Jennifer Esposito, the municipality’s economic development officer, said Tuesday.
A scenic view of the lake makes it appealing for housing development, she added.
The municipality’s conceptual drawing for the land depicts a hotel across the street from the airport, but “the potential buyer will be free to develop the property as they choose,” she said.
“Proposals are due by May 29, and the developer will have to include their plans,” she said. “Council will be evaluating those proposals based on their priorities.
“And one of those priorities is to see a hotel and conference centre developed there, as well as seeing more residential development.”
Because the 27 acres are so close to a busy airport, Esposito said, “our hope has always been to see that property developed in a way that would help to benefit the surrounding First Nations that we serve.”
Sioux Lookout has people flying in from First Nations every day for medical services, so a hotel near the airport makes sense, she said.

Services are readily available at the site and most pre-development work has already been completed, she added.
“The development of Bigwood Lake marks a significant milestone in our efforts to create a thriving and inclusive community with adequate housing and services,” said Brian MacKinnon, Sioux Lookout’s chief administrative officer.
“This project aligns with our commitment to sustainable growth,” he said. “We look forward to collaborating with stakeholders and community members to ensure its success.”
