Large Shelf Cloud Looms Over Alberta's Red Deer County

A large shelf cloud dominated the skyline in Red Deer County, Alberta, on Thursday morning, June 23, as residents were warned that severe thunderstorms would form from morning through to the early evening.

This footage from Lonny Kennett shows the cloud looming low over fields southeast of the city of Red Deer.

Environment Canada said the storms forming across central and southeast Alberta could produce “large hail, strong winds and heavy downpours,” with 40 to 60 mm (1.5 to 2.3 inches) of rain expected to fall by Friday morning. Credit: Lonny Kennett via Storyful
