LaSalle police officer saves family from house fire

A LaSalle police officer is being called a hero for saving a family from their burning home.

The fire broke out in a home on Gignac Crescent around midnight Thursday. The patrol officer noticed smoke billowing from the roof and pounded on the door until someone answered.

Const. Harbinder Gill said a man, woman, teenager and two young children were in the house with their two dogs.

"He got them out quickly," he said of his officer's efforts.

The fire appears to have started because of an electrical problem in the garage.

The chief of LaSalle Fire Services praised police on Twitter for the "great action" and "teamwork."
