A New Leash Of Life: Dog Nurses Donkey Back To Health After Hit-And-Run

A donkey that was left for dead after a brutal hit-and-run has been nursed back to help - with a little help from his canine pal.

Guerreirinho was close to being put down as a result of his injuries from a car crash in Fortaleza, Brazil.

A vet who arrived at the scene was about to euthanise the animal when onlookers protested and the young donkey was taken to the home of local animal protector, Stefanie Rodrigues.

There, the animal was cared for by both Stefanie - and two-month-old rescue dog Charlot, who struck up a close bond with Guerreirinho.

Charlot now keeps her friend warm, cuddling him and licking his face comfortingly.

Stefanie said: “The reciprocity of them was immediate. There was so much love and affection involved.”

Guerreirinho - which translates to little warrior - had three fractures to his legs following the accident and Stefanie set up a shelter for him where she cared for him daily by bottle feeding him, changing his bedding, putting medication on bedsores and giving him plenty of love and affection.

Locals have been helping her by contributing money for Guerreirinho’s care, which includes surgery and physical therapy.

After the surgery, Stefanie plans to keep the colt and continue looking after him so Charlot and Guerreirinho can remain close pals.

She added: “He will not be put up for adoption, because it is already a member of my family, for he is a son to me.

“He will be in my care, even if he ends up with limitations to his movement, I will never allow him to be killed. That’s for sure.

"It has been so hard. But if I had to do it all again, I would.”
