Legends of Tomorrow: 5 Things We Wish We’d Gotten to See Before Cancellation

Legends of Tomorrow was unceremoniously cancelled by The CW over a year ago in April 2022, but our hearts are still on the Waverider… and our imaginations are still conjuring up what might have been if the show had been renewed.

The Season 7 finale-turned-series ender concluded with several big cliffhangers, including the long-awaited introduction of the DC Comics character Booster Gold (played by Scrubs vet Donald Faison), who betrayed the Legends and got them all arrested for time crimes. The reveal opened “a lot of doors” for Season 8 (that shall, sadly, remain closed), co-showrunner Keto Shimizu told TVLine in a post-mortem interview.

Elsewhere, in an only-on-Legends-of-Tomorrow twist, Sara learned that she was pregnant, thanks to her half-alien status that somehow allowed Ava to knock up her wife. Plus, Nate lost his superpower and returned to the totem to live with Zari 1.0., while another character was poised to potentially finally have his own love story.

With so many storylines left unfinished following the show’s abrupt end, TVLine has crafted a wish list of five things we wish we’d gotten to see happen in an eighth season, from expecting Sara’s unexpected journey to the return of a former Legend.

Sara and Ava as Moms

Perhaps the most painful aspect of Legends of Tomorrow’s abrupt cancellation was being robbed of the opportunity to watch the captains as moms-to-be after learning that Sara was preggers with Ava’s baby, who had absorbed Sara’s healing ability, leaving her mortal once again. The surprise was a huge moment in the former assassin’s journey from her time on Arrow that deserved to be played out.

How would Sara and Ava adjust to motherhood? What complications would come with a half-alien pregnancy? And who would be the godparents? Between the inevitable stresses and anxieties that accompany being a badass time-traveler while expecting, the potential for heartfelt drama and comedic hilarity on both mommies’ parts was high. And judging by the finale, Caity Lotz and Jes Macallan would have knocked it out of the park Waverider.

More Booster Gold

Booster Gold’s big entrance in the Season 7 finale was supposed to be just the beginning: Faison’s fixer from the future was set to serve as a major part of the series moving forward. When the infamous character showed up and revealed his comic-book identity, it was clear that he was going to have a big impact on the Legends, not only in terms of the DC Comics mythology he brought with him, but also in his interactions with the team.

“He’s a kind of character who can really poke at our Legends and their perceptions of each other and themselves and maybe call them out on some of the bulls–t here and there,” Shimizu described, noting that Booster Gold is “someone who has a very distinct point of view and who can keep everybody on their toes.”

Alas, we never got to truly see how Booster Gold would integrate into the group or whether the show would have him be Rip Hunter’s father, as he is in the comics.

A New Love Story

So much of Season 7 and the arc of Matt Ryan’s new character, Dr. Gwyn Davies, was built on his desire to save his best friend, Alun, via the invention of time travel. Gwyn was eventually successful in that mission, preventing the death of the man he loved in World War I. At last, the two were finally reunited in the finale, hinting at the possibility that viewers might get to actually see their love story unfold. We hoped that Alun would stick around for the Legends’ latest adventure and start a relationship with Gwyn in Season 8 — but then the show got unjustly axed.

A Prison Break

Booster Gold’s role in getting the Legends arrested for time crimes and the team’s tricky predicament was going to have “a huge impact on a potential Season 8 in that they’re going to be in jail,” Shimizu told TVLine, adding that the plan was to find out “more about this organization that has put all the fixers in all these different places and find out what happens when you commit too many time crimes.”

Prison Break alums Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell were no longer a part of the ensemble by the end of Season 7, but how fun would it have been to see the rest of the Waverider crew attempt to escape time jail and the authorities? Maybe Miller’s Leo-X could have swooped in at the last minute for a cheeky assist? Speaking of…

Legendary Returns

Even when it was time to say goodbye to a Legend, their portrayer often stayed on the series as a new character. Even when cast members left the Waverider for good, the door was often reopened for a return visit, so we definitely would have welcomed the reappearance of Brandon Routh’s Ray Palmer or Maisie Richardson-Sellers’ Charlie in order to check in on how they’re doing. Most of all, Booster Gold’s intro had us hoping that somehow, someway the deceased Rip Hunter (played by Arthur Darvill) could have come back to harken to the DC Comics lore.
