Lexington 1 names future superintendent. Here’s who will lead district next

Lexington 1 has a new superintendent-elect and, by the summer of next year, it will have a new superintendent, too.

The Lexington 1 school board voted Tuesday to offer the unusual position to Georgetown County Superintendent Keith Price, who will serve for a year in the central Lexington County school district as the designated successor to current Lexington 1 Superintendent Gerrita Postlewait.

Price will take up the job starting July 1 “or as soon thereafter as he is available,” for a one-year term as superintendent-elect, with a salary of $210,000. Beginning July 1, 2025, Price will begin a four-year term as superintendent with a salary of $236,000.

Price has led the coastal Georgetown district since 2020, but he’s spent much of his teaching career in the Midlands. He was previously an assistant superintendent in Richland 2 for six years, principal of Blythewood High School for three years and principal at E.L. Wright Middle School for four years. He is currently pursuing a doctorate of education at the University of South Carolina.

Price beat out Chris Ballenger, superintendent of Virginia’s Warren County schools, and Erin Slater, superintendent of Iowa’s Fort Madison Community School District, after a nationwide search.

Board chairwoman Anne Marie Green thanked the outgoing superintendent Postlewait for identifying the right path forward for the district and said she was “extremely excited to see what will happen in Lexington 1 over the next year, three years, five years.

“I think we will build on the success we’ve always experienced,” Green said.

Postlewait, formerly the head of Charleston County’s schools, came to Lexington in the summer of 2022 on an interim basis to fill in for Greg Little, who stepped down to take a job with the technical college system. She was hired full-time that October for a five-year contract. But when the school district advertised for a deputy superintendent earlier this year, Postlewait made clear she would prefer to have a designated successor in place as she neared the end of a 50-year career in education.
