Here’s who made moves on Centre County’s wrestling leaderboards as holiday break nears

Christmas is right around the corner, which means high school wrestling teams will get a little bit of a break from competition.

All five of Centre County’s schools took part in an individual tournament on Friday and Saturday. Four other schools got some dual action in during the week.

Penns Valley was the lone team to earn a dual win as it topped Bellefonte 51-9 on Wednesday. Philipsburg-Osceola fell to Clearfield, 42-25, on Tuesday.

Also on Wednesday, State College lost to Central Dauphin, 55-17.

The Rams and Bald Eagle Area earned second place finishes as a team at their respective tournaments. Penns Valley tallied 136 points to finish runner-up at the Panther Holiday Classic to Connellsville, who had an 80-point cushion.

The Mounties had a pair of finalists in Caleb Hummel and Marcus Gable at the Panther Holiday Classic, and finished in 14th with 98 points. Hummel secured a title.

The Eagles had 146.5 points with three finalists in Tanner Guenot, Lucas Fye and Caleb Close at the King of the Mountain, where the Little Lions and Red Raiders also competed. Guenot was the lone champion for BEA, which was 49.5 points behind hosts Central Mountain.

State College had a pair of champions in its 10th place finish, and had 97.5 points. Bellefonte was 26th with 41.5 points.

On the girls’ side this week, Philipsburg-Osceola earned its first dual victory for the program by topping Clearfield, 24-12.

The Lady Mounties and BEA took part in the Queen of the Mountain Dual Tournament Sunday.

P-O had a good tournament by finishing fourth. It was 3-2 with wins over Shikellamy (36-6), Williamsport (25-24) and Central Mountain (30-24).

The Lady Mounties suffered a 36-24 loss to Hughesville in the third-place match. The Lady Eagles were 0-5 on the day and finished 10th.

Let’s take a look at the leaderboards:

Wins

This week’s action saw eight wrestlers get to double-digit wins already this season, coming from four of the county’s teams.

Half of those wrestlers are from Penns Valley.

Ty Watson and Colten Shunk lead the Rams with 12 wins a piece. They each had six wins this week — five in the Panther Holiday Classic.

Watson finished second, losing 7-5 to Penn Cambria’s Trent Hoover in the finals. Shunk had a third-place finish.

Watson also picked up career win No. 100 when he pinned Westmont Hilltop’s David Ray in the quarterfinals on Friday night. His 10th victory this season was another pin, Daniel Boone’s Ryan Poorem in 42 seconds in the second round.

Shunk’s 10th win was a 3-0 shutout of Manheim Central’s Barrett Keiffer in the quarterfinals.

The other Penns Valley wrestlers to collect win No. 10 were Jack Darlington and Ethan Fetterolf. Darlington’s 10th victory was a 3-1 win over Northern Bedford’s Wyatt Clouse in his fifth-place match. Fetterolf’s win was a pin of Tunkhannock’s Patrick Munley in the consolation quarterfinals.

The county leader remained the same in State College’s Asher Cunningham, who added six wins this week and is at 15 on the season. He claimed a King of the Mountain title and was named the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler.

Cunningham’s 10th victory came during the dual when he stuck Central Dauphin’s Mason Wydra in 2:30.

Fellow Little Lions wrestler Nick Pavlechko claimed a King of the Mountain crown, and got to 13 wins on the year. His 10th victory was a pin of Montoursville’s Landon Morehart in the first round.

Caden Judice became the first BEA wrestler to get to 10-plus wins on the year, as he had six during his third-place finish of the King of the Mountain. He has 11 victories, but his 10th was a 15-0 technical fall over Chambersburg’s Zachary Sherman in the consolation semifinals.

The Red Raiders’ Ezra Swisher is the first for his team to get to 10 wins. He had six for the week, with his 10th coming in the fifth-place match over Cranberry’s Dane Wenner, 5-0.

Bellefonte’s Jack McHail and Penns Valley’s Ethan Fetterolf battle for position in their 160-pound bout of the Rams’ 51-9 win on Wednesday at Bellefonte. Fetterolf pinned McHail in 3:17, which was one of his six on the year.

Pins

There was a change at the top of this leaderboard with Fetterolf taking the top spot away from Fye and Pavlechko.

The Rams wrestler had six pins on the week. He had five alone in the Panther Holiday Classic on his way to a sixth-place finish.

Fetterolf also became the first county wrestler to get to 10-plus pins. His 10th pin was his 10th victory previously discussed.

Watson, who has seven falls this season, had the next highest amount of pins this week with five. He needed five heading into the Panther Holiday Classic to tie Penns Valley’s career pin mark, which is 70.

The Penn State commit secured only four falls, so his next chance of tying the mark will be Dec. 21 at Mifflinburg.

Pavlechko pinned his way to his title, which was a total of four falls, to get to nine on the year. His fastest came over Morehart in 1:09.

Close pinned his way to the King of the Mountain finals, which had him collect three falls, and is up to seven on the year. Guenot had three falls this week, and he used one to earn his first King of the Mountain crown.

Fye began his run to the finals with a pair of pins that saw him wrestle a total of 58 seconds.

Philipsburg-Osceola’s Caleb Hummel was one of five county wrestlers to add a fastest fall time this week.

Fastest falls

There were five new times added this week to the list.

Hummel had the fastest new time this week when he stuck Clearfield’s David Magnuson in 22 seconds during the dual on Tuesday.

Fye added his third time to the list this year as he flattened Central York’s Blake Anderson in 23 seconds of the second round of the King of the Mountain.

A trio of Rams wrestlers finish out the new times this week. Brayden Lisowski had a 30-seconds pin of St. Marys’ AJ Himes in the first round. Joel Conklin stuck Tunkhannock’s Jacob Walsh in 32 seconds of their consolation second round match. Fetterolf took care of Mount Union’s Abe Weirich in 34 seconds of their consolation third round bout.

Bellefonte’s Noah Weaver became one of four county wrestlers to have multiple technical falls on the year now.

Technical falls & major decisions

Three wrestlers this week had multiple technical falls.

Shunk opened his Panther Holiday Classic with consecutive techs. He topped fellow District 6 wrestlers in P-O’s Hunter Kephart, 16-1, and Huntingdon’s Liam Simpson, 19-4.

Shunk has four technical falls to lead the county.

Hummel and State College’s Noah Young jumped on to the leaderboard with their multiple technical falls.

Hummel opened the Panther Holiday Classic with back-to-back technical falls. He shut out Huntingdon’s Degan Brown and Northern Bedford’s Kace Clapper, while racking up 30 combined points in the bouts.

Young started the King of the Mountain with a 17-0 shutout of Red Lion’s Blake Fumia. He stayed alive in the consolation bracket with a 15-0 win over Boyertown’s Brody Tobias in the second round.

Bellefonte’s Noah Weaver is the only other wrestler to have multiple technical falls after having another this week. He shut out Cranberry’s Alex McLaughlin, 16-0, in their first round match of the King of the Mountain.

Five other county wrestlers secured their first technical fall this week.

Penns Valley’s Brandon Corl had a pair of major decisions to climb into the county lead with Cunningham and Pierson Manville.

Corl earned his major decisions in back-to-back rounds. He first topped Northwestern’s Gregory Gruda, 12-1, in the third round of consolations. Corl followed it with an 11-3 win over Boiling Spring’s Demetri White.

Twelve county wrestlers picked up their first major decision this week.

Girls

Philipsburg-Osceola’s Isabella Duvall, seen here in a February photo, leads the county with six wins and is tied for the county lead with five pins.

Wins

The action has been limited for the girls’ teams, but this weekend gave BEA and P-O plenty of action during the Queen of the Mountain.

The Lady Mounties’ Isabella DuVall is the lone undefeated wrestler on her team, and her six victories lead the county. She picked up five victories on Sunday.

Her teammate Daisy Glessner and State College’s Anna Lackey are one victory behind with five a piece.

Glessner earned all of her wins on the season on Sunday as she suffered a loss in the dual against Clearfield. Lackey earned all five of her victories during the Dallastown Invitational on Dec. 9.

There are nine wrestlers that have earned victories — all having at least two.

Pins

DuVall and Glessner lead this category together with five pins a piece.

Glessner picked up all of her falls on Sunday. DuVall had four on the day to go along with her pin in the Clearfield dual.

Teammate Charli Hunt is third in the county with four pins. She earned her first in the Clearfield dual, and added the others during the Queen of the Mountain.

BEA’s Grace Crestani, who has four wins on the year, had three falls on Sunday. Crestani shares the fourth-place spot in the county for pins with Lackey.

The Lady Mounties’ Annabella Hunt is the only other county wrestler with multiple pins. Three others have one fall on the year.

Fastest falls

P-O combined to have seven of the top 10 times on this list. It comes as no surprise since it has the most wrestlers.

DuVall has three times, Glessner has a pair, and Annabella Hunt and Marleana Hunt have one a piece.

Glessner has the quickest fall when she stuck Hughesville’s Jayda Rodriguez in 13 seconds. Her other pin of Shikellamy’s Abiagael Merchlinsky was in 44 seconds, which is sixth best.

DuVall has the third, fourth and eighth times. She stuck Shikellamy’s Skyler Wiest in 22 seconds, which was the first dual of the Queen of the Mountain. In the fourth dual of the tournament, DuVall flattened Central Mountain’s Kennedy Metzger in 24 seconds.

The second dual of the tournament saw DuVall put Pocono Mountain West’s Zada Johnson on her back in 49 seconds.

Annabella Hunt’s 19 seconds pin of Shikellamy’s Jersey Herb is the second fastest pin. Marleana Hunt’s pin of Williamsport’s Bethany Showers in 56 seconds is the gatekeeper to the list.

Crestani’s pair of fall times and Lackey’s one time rounds out the top 10.
