In the past year, Maggie Rogers and Jane Fonda went from mutual fans to friends.

After the Oscar winner saw Rogers perform for the first time at the Hollywood Bowl last August, she shared a glowing review of the singer-songwriter on Instagram — and Rogers responded, inviting her to "drink martinis and talk about environmental policy."

Not long after, they did just that — and became fast friends.

"I am obsessed with Jane. We've now spent quite a bit of time together. We have dinner every time I'm in LA and I just spent three days with her in New Orleans with Greenpeace. She is just so inspiring and so powerful," Rogers, 29, says of her bond with Fonda, 86. "We text. I'm obsessed with her. She's so smart and so cool and so real, and she checks in on how my crushes are going. She has amazing stories, and she wants to have martinis."

And the Grammy nominee — who just released her third LP, Don't Forget Me — sees Fonda as a confidante as well as a mentor.

“She’s not afraid to make mistakes, and her fearlessness has allowed her to live such a powerful life. I think there’s something we can all learn from that," Rogers adds. "If I can grow up to be a fraction of as cool as her one day, then I will have lived a great life."

Since rising to fame after her breakout song "Alaska" left Pharrell Williams speechless when he visited her New York University music production class in eight years ago, Rogers has unleashed three albums — and found several A-list fans. In addition to befriending Fonda, Rogers has hit the stage with Madonna (in Boston in January) and Joan Baez (at Carnegie Hall in February).

“I feel so grateful to this older generation of women who have just been so fearless," says Rogers, who just announced her first-ever headlining arena tour. "My career doesn’t exist without these women. I feel so lucky to be in any proximity to be able to learn from them."
