A man in his 60s is in life-threatening condition after he was shot during an attempted robbery at a store in Scarborough, Toronto police say.

Police said just after 8 p.m., they were called to the area of Eglinton Avenue East and Brimley Road after two males with firearms entered a Rexall drugstore.

Duty Insp. Lori Kranenburg said when police arrived they found a man in his 60s suffering from gunshot wounds.

Kranenburg said he was transported to hospital via emergency run.

"He is currently in critical condition and is in surgery," she said.

It was not immediately clear if he was a store employee or a customer.

Police said the gunmen fled the scene in a vehicle.

Kranenburg said both men were wearing hoodies, one grey, the other black.
