Man arrested, charged after string of cellphone thefts in Lasalle

Khadim Toure Tall faces 8 criminal charges in connection with a string of cellphone muggings that took place in the last few weeks in the Montreal borough of LaSalle.

The 21-year-old appeared in a Montreal courtroom Monday and was charged with eight counts of armed robbery, carrying a weapon or imitation weapon for a dangerous purpose, carrying a concealed weapon, receiving stolen property and possession of property obtained by crime.

Montreal police say they arrested Tall thanks to tips from the public.

Police were warning people to be vigilant, especially after dark, since all the reported muggings took place between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m.

Alleged victims reported seeing the handle of a gun or having a gun shown to them.

Police say that in spite of the arrest, the investigation continues. Investigators say they have reason to believe there could be more alleged victims, and they are urging anyone with information to come forward.

Police also say that anyone with a mobile device should get the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number by dialing *#06# on their device. In case of loss or theft, a victim can provide the IMEI number to the cellphone provider to get the phone deactivated, while police can put the number on a blacklist.
