Diving crews were at the Spray Lakes Reservoir on Tuesday, looking for a man who disappeared after he jumped off a boat to rescue his dog.

RCMP media relations officer Cpl. Gina Slaney says the man, who is from Calgary, was with his spouse, a 10-year-old girl and a puppy, fishing on the Kananaskis Country reservoir Sunday.

Slaney said the dog jumped from the boat and the man attempted to retrieve it by jumping in as well.

"A short time later, the male and dog submerged and did not resurface," Slaney said.

Canmore RCMP were dispatched to the reported drowning around 7 p.m.

Slaney said officers were continuing search efforts with help from the Central Alberta Rescue Diving Society.

"Right now it's a recovery mission, and hopefully we will be able to recover the male victim and give the family some closure," Slaney said.

RCMP were asking the public to avoid the south end of Spray Lakes.
