A  man has been charged with first-degree murder after a woman was found dead in Wickham, near Drummondville, Que., provincial police say.

Kevin Romagosa, 39, was also charged with one count of indecent interference with the remains of Robyn-Krystle O'Reilly, 34.

The two were married and had been living together.

Sûreté du Québec (SQ) officers were called to Wickham around noon on Saturday. When they arrived, they found O'Reilly's body. But the initial alarm was raised in Montreal, police say.

"The [Montreal police] received a call from the relatives of the man and the woman involved in that case because they were worried for their safety," said SQ spokesperson Stéphane Tremblay.

The SQ and the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal are investigating O'Reilly's death as a homicide.

Romagosa was arrested at the scene and taken to hospital for medical evaluation.

He appeared by video conference at the Drummondville courthouse Monday afternoon. The judge ordered a psychiatric assessment of him, after Romagosa's lawyer requested it. Romagosa is expected back in court Aug. 29.

Robert Nadler, Romagosa's supervisor at lighting systems company Stanpro, said he was shocked to hear about the death from another employee over the weekend.

"We're absolutely devastated," Nadler said. "We'll go one day at a time. The focus is on the employees to make sure everything runs smoothly. Our best thoughts to the family."

Police say an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause and circumstances of the woman's death.
