Jermaine Wood, 29, arrested in connection with fatal Brampton stabbing
Police have arrested a suspect after a stabbing death in broad daylight in Brampton early Tuesday afternoon.
Peel police arrested Jermaine Wood, 29, of Brampton, hours after naming him as a suspect in the stabbing death of a man near a low-rise apartment complex.
Police had described Wood as armed and dangerous. However, Const. Lilly Fitzpatrick could not say whether he was carrying any weapons when he was taken into custody.
"There are no further public safety concerns," Fitzpatrick told CBC News on Tuesday evening.
Peel police were called to1219 Leslie Street near McLaughlin Road at around 12:30 p.m. for reports of a disturbance.
A 61-year-old man had been stabbed several times just outside the entryway of the building, Fitzpatrick said earlier Tuesday.
CBC's Makda Ghebreslassie reported from the scene that witnesses told her the victim was initially alert, walking around, with paramedics trying to calm him down.
The victim was rushed to Brampton Civic Hospital with serious head injuries.
A short time later, Peel police tweeted that the victim had died and the force's homicide detectives had taken over the investigation.
The victim's family has been notified, but police have not released his identity. It was not immediately clear if the victim was a resident of the building, Fitzpatrick said, or if the victim and suspect knew each other.
The recreation centre across the street from the apartment complex has security cameras and investigators will review the footage, she said.
McLaughlin Road had been closed between Campbell Drive and Flowertown Avenue due to the ongoing police activity, which included the canine and tactical units.
