Man dead after shooting inside Sherbourne Street apartment building

Police ID victim of fatal Sherbourne Street TCH complex shooting as Brent Young, 41

One man is dead after a shooting inside a downtown apartment building early Monday morning, according to Toronto police.

Officers were called to the Toronto Community Housing complex at 251 Sherbourne Street, near Dundas Street E., shortly after 2:30 a.m. for reports of gunfire.

They found the victim, in a unit on the third floor, with gunshot injuries and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Homicide Det. Rob Choe said police hope to confirm the man's identity in the coming hours but that he's believed to be in his late 30s or early 40s.

Choe said he has "reason to believe" that a number of functioning security cameras captured relevant footage of the incident.

"We are sifting through that right now, reviewing some footage and hopefully we will have something for you later this afternoon," Choe added.

The scene appeared to be wholly contained to the apartment where the shooting occurred, he continued.

Amie Phillips, a resident of the building who says she knew the victim personally, told CBC Toronto that she heard four gun shots. She added that the victim is a "family man" and described him as a kind man without "a nasty bone in his body."

The shooting capped off a violent weekend in the GTA. Four people were shot to death in three separate incidents, while a fifth person was fatally stabbed, all within a period of less than 48 hours.
