Police identify Georgina man, 30, fatally shot outside Newmarket home

York Regional Police have identified a man fatally shot outside a Newmarket home as Cody Gionet, 30, of Georgina, Ont.

Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the Saturday night shooting on Sheldon Avenue, near Yonge Street and Davis Drive, but no charges have been laid, police said in a news release.

Insp. Russ Bellman, duty inspector for York Regional Police, said officers responded to a residence at about 9:50 p.m. for a weapons call.

When officers arrived, they found Gionet suffering from gunshot wounds in a driveway. He was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Homicide detectives said they are appealing for more witnesses to the shooting to come forward.

"The investigation is still ongoing. Investigators have been interviewing witnesses and will be following up on information gained through this co-operation," the release reads.

"Any additional witnesses that may have seen or heard anything in the area of Sheldon Avenue leading up to, or following, the shooting are asked to contact police."

Police said they are also appealing to nearby businesses or residences that may have surveillance camera footage to come forward.

Sheldon Avenue in Newmarket continues to be closed as police investigate.

"It's still a crime scene," Bellman said.
