Man believed to be homeless found dead in Brampton

The body of a man believed to be homeless has been found near Highway 410 and Queen Street East in Brampton, Peel police said on Sunday.

Police located the body in the area of a homeless encampment that is close to the highway after receiving a call at about 4:45 a.m., according to Const. Danny Marttini, spokesperson for Peel Regional Police.

"He wasn't on the roadway. He was off the roadway," Marttini said. "It has nothing actually to do with the roadway at all. There are some tents and stuff set up in that area."

Police do not consider the death to be suspicious, but they have to continue to treat it as suspicious until it can be confirmed otherwise, she said.

There appears to be nothing to indicate something untoward happened, she added.

"He was found deceased. They have to confirm how is it that he died," she said.

Roads reopened but police remain on scene

Marttini said an autopsy will be performed to determine cause of death.

Police are trying to determine why he was in the area, which he was known to frequent, she said.

Highway 410's southbound on and off ramps, which were closed to allow officers to investigate, have been reopened. Police from the criminal investigations bureau remain on the scene.

"For our investigation to proceed, we had to close down the whole area, including the roadway [leading] to where he was found," Marttini said.

Officers have identified the man, but they have not released his name or age.
