  • UPDATE | Police have identified the victim as Trevor John, a 31-year-old from Toronto

A man was killed in a double shooting in north Toronto early Tuesday, police say.

Gunfire erupted shortly after 1 a.m. outside a residential building on Winona Drive near Vaughan Road, in Toronto's Oakwood Village neighbourhood, according to Det.-Sgt. Jason Davis.

A man and a female standing outside the building were approached by an unknown number of people in a vehicle and shot, Davis said.

Both were taken to hospital.

The man, who has since been identified as 31-year-old Trevor John, was pronounced dead. The female has non-life threatening injuries, Davis said.

Homicide investigators are canvassing for video and appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

Davis said they hope to provide a description of the suspect vehicle.

Close-knit community shaken

Bill Worrell, chair of the Oakwood Vaughan Community Organization, was at the scene later in the morning. He said he lives a block away from the site of the shooting and has been getting distressed texts from neighbours.

"As someone who really cares about this community, I've lived here 42 years, I've raised my family here, it makes me very sad," he said.

Worrell said he's worried violent acts like this could become more normal in his neighbourhood, as the cost of living rises and people become more desperate.

"People are struggling," he said. "Maybe (police) can have a community meeting and talk about making the place more safe."

Audie West, who heard the gunshots outside his building, says he was an acquaintance of John's, describing the man as "friendly, polite, easy-going." He says the shooting came as a shock.

"It's sad. Everybody's close together here," he said. "This shouldn't be happening in this neighbourhood."
