2 injured in Lac du Bonnet boat fire

Mountie charged with improper storage of a firearm after police watchdog investigation

Two people were injured after a boat caught fire in Lac Du Bonnet Friday afternoon.

Manitoba RCMP said they were called just before 3:30 p.m. to a report of a boat on fire.

The boat was on the water in front of White Spruce on the Lake, an RV trailer resort, less than a kilometre from shore when it caught fire.

Lac du Bonnet fire Chief David Lussier said the inboard engine caught fire and exploded.

A man and a woman were in the boat at the time and were rescued by people in a nearby boat, Lussier said. Both were rushed to hospital by ambulance and the woman sustained serious injuries.

Lussier said the boat is a total loss.

Jordan LeBlanc, the general manager at White Spruce on the Lake, said he did not see the fire, but one of the people staying at the resort was actually a burn nurse who responded to the scene.

"She was quickly on site, so we were very happy to have her around," he said.

The nurse helped the woman who had escaped the boat and LeBlanc said she was handling the situation well and did not appear to be in critical condition.
