Police ID this year's 2nd homicide victim: He was in the 'wrong place at the wrong time'

Toronto police say a 24-year-old man died after an early morning shooting Monday near Islington Avenue and Finch Avenue West that left a white sedan riddled with bullets.

Police said the man was shot in the head on Monday around 1 a.m. while he was a passenger in a car. He was rushed to Sunnybrook Hospital, where he died of his injuries.

He was identified later Monday as Dylan Gill.

Residents told CBC Toronto they heard seven or eight shots that came from the area of a strip mall. The car in which the man was shot dead was found just blocks away by police.

Area resident Farhia Husein said she heard gunfire in the middle of the night. "It's very scary," she said.

'We're shocked,' says victim's aunt

Members of Gill's family, who were at the scene Monday morning, said he was in the "wrong place at the wrong time."

"We're shocked," said the man's aunt, who declined to give her name to CBC Toronto.

She said he was a "naive, young guy" and "just a lovable human being."

Several shell casings were found in the area of the shooting, Toronto police Const. Jenifferjit Sidhu said.

Police said the suspect's vehicle was last seen fleeing southbound on Islington Avenue. No suspect description has been released.

Sidhu said it's not yet clear if this was a drive-by shooting, or if two cars were parked in the same area when the shooting began.

Homicide detectives have now taken over the investigation. Police say that Gill is the second homicide victim of this year.

The other passengers in the sedan have been taken in for questioning.
