A North Carolina man appears to have the midas touch following his recent second lottery win – but instead of using the winnings solely for himself, he’s aiming to use the funds to help his community.

John Robbins, from Wilmington, first won the lottery for $2 million in May 2022. Now, he's continuing his streak thanks to another win earlier this month for $100,000 – with both tickets purchased at the same location. Speaking with the North Carolina Education Lottery, Robbins said of the dual wins, “I was told lightning can’t strike twice but I guess it can.”

As for how he plans to spend his second round of lottery winnings, Robbins told NC Education Lottery that his “dreams” include helping those who need it in his community. “My dream is to make a difference in Wilmington,” he said. “I want to give back to people here who are less fortunate. I want to do something to help change that."

Robbins’ story is similar to Virginia resident Jennifer Minton, who won the lottery twice within the same week last year. Minton won $50,000 playing the Virginia Lottery’s Safari Quest online game in mid-October. Just one week later, she won again — but this time it was the nearly $1 million jackpot, lottery officials said.

Minton told lottery officials at the time that she had been sitting around a campfire while playing the same lottery game on her mobile device when she noticed the jackpot reset. She recalled thinking at the moment, “Dang, somebody just hit. They are so lucky!” without initially realizing she had secured a second win.
