MAP 59’ tender comes in under budget

LISTOWEL – All of the community’s support and volunteers’ hard work fundraising for a cause that has historic relevance to the Town of Listowel, has paid off.

According to an April 15 report to council, construction of the new Listowel Memorial Arena Park 59’ (MAP59’) will begin by May 1, 2024, and be completed by December 1, 2024.

Council awarded the tender to Horst Excavating Inc. of Monkton, in the amount up to $1,250,285.05. The award amount includes the base bid price, plus the bid price for selected provisional items, and a 15 per cent contingency amount. The tender closed on Thursday, April 4, 2024, with 13 bids received.

According to the report for Jeff Newell, Manager of Facilities, the approved funding for this project in the 2024 capital budget was $1,400,000.

It is noted that the MAP 59’ Fundraising Committee has raised and will continue to raise funds for this project. Newell told council the group has roughly $730,000 in pledges from their fundraising.

The park, will be located at 380 Maitland Avenue in Listowel, and the memorial aspect of the park will include a memorial area, trees, sensory playground, seasonal ice-skating rink, pathways, lighting, and passive recreation space.

“For all the work that is being done by so many, and in fact over many man years, we want you to know the community values what is happening here and is looking forward to it, and thank you so much,” Mayor Todd Kasenberg said in closing.
