Mark Lange named dangerous offender by Yukon court

A Whitehorse man, with a history of violence, is going back to prison indefinitely after a Yukon territorial court judge named him a dangerous offender.

Mark Lange, 40, has a lengthy criminal record, with 42 convictions. He spent seven years in jail on a manslaughter conviction, for the 2004 death of Carcross hotel owner Bob Olson.

Last year, Lange was filmed outside the Salvation Army in Whitehorse repeatedly beating a man, then stomping on the unconscious man's head. He was charged and pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm.

Crown prosecutors say Lange's record shows no real gaps in his violent behaviour.

The dangerous offender designation is reserved for criminals deemed a danger to the public. The indefinite prison sentence for Lange is the most severe available in the Criminal Code.

Prosecutors say the sentence aims to ensure public safety, if or when Lange is ever released from prison.
