Meals on Wheels delivers to seniors in Grand Falls-Windsor

Seniors who have a hard time getting nutritional food are taking part in a Meals on Wheels pilot project in the Town of Grand Falls-Windsor.

The not-for-profit, volunteer-run project started in December with a weekly delivery to 15 seniors in the community.

"Not only do they get a hot meal," said Michelle Day, who works with Meals on Wheels, "But they're also able to get some independence and a face-to-face [interaction] at the door."

The program is a partnership between the town, Central Health and the provincial government. Meals are made at the health authority's cafeteria and delivered on Thursdays by volunteer drivers.

The pilot project will last a year and than be reviewed for possible expansion.

Growing Need

"It's been a couple of years pretty well now since the idea was sprung," said Mayor Barry Manuel.

"We look forward to not only the pilot project but certainly a full fledged program in the future."

Manuel said that the town has an aging demographic and there are some seniors with barriers in the community. He said he's sure there's "a lot more" residents that could use the service and hopes the pilot project performs well.

The meals are five dollars each and billed to program users monthly.
