A 70-year-old pedestrian has died after being struck by two vehicles on Merivale Road not far from Carling Avenue Wednesday evening, according to Ottawa police.

The man was hit at the intersection of Merivale Road and Thames Street, one block south of Carling, at about 6:45 p.m.

He was struck by the driver of a Toyota Corolla, police said, and that knocked him into the path of a second person driving a Honda Civic. The man was taken to The Ottawa Hospital's Civic campus trauma unit with life-threatening injuries and later died.

Police closed a section of Merivale between Carling and Coldrey avenues. It has since reopened.

The Ottawa police collisions unit is investigating. Officers have already spoken with some witnesses but are asking anyone else who saw the incident or who has information to contact police.

Earlier Wednesday, a 35-year-old pedestrian was seriously injured when he was struck by a vehicle on the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway near Woodroffe Avenue.

RCMP said charges were not anticipated in that case.
