Merthyr Tydfil: Tributes to 'rugby mad' teenager who died days after 18th birthday

The family of a "rugby mad" teenager who died in a crash just 11 days after his 18th birthday have said he was a "remarkable young man".

Ceirion Galliers, from Abercanaid in Merthyr Tydfil, died after being struck by a car on the A4060 between Pentrebach and Mountain Hare at around 10.40pm on Saturday 22 July.

In a tribute, his family said they were "inconsolable" following his death, and described him as an "academic high-flyer".

Ceirion was head boy at Afon Taf High School before going on to complete his studies at UWC Atlantic College.

He had also secured a full-time role with the CPS just six weeks ago.

"It's no exaggeration to say a whole town is in mourning," they said.

A keen rugby player, his team Merthyr RFC have retired the number nine shirt for the upcoming season in tribute to him.

The family also thanked medical staff who looked after Ceirion after the collision and all those who have paid their respects.
