X-Men star Michael Fassbender has landed his next leading role in a TV remake.

Fassbender has been cast in an English-language version of the French spy thriller Le Bureau des Légendes (aka The Bureau), which originally aired in the UK on top streaming service Prime Video.

The gritty series followed the agents of France's security service as they tracked down some of the most dangerous external threats to the country.

French film legend Mathieu Kassovitz led an ensemble cast in The Bureau that also included James Bond actor Mathieu Amalric and Zineb Triki (Homeland).

Deadline reports that two-time Oscar winner George Clooney will be producing a remake of The Bureau, with Fassbender set to star and executive-produce.

The series, which has been renamed The Agency, moves the action to America. Fassbender's character, Martian, is an undercover agent ordered to return to a normal life in London.

Martian is surprised by the sudden reappearance of a lost love who tests his professional and personal loyalties as part of a dangerous international conspiracy.

Brothers Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth have penned all 10 episodes of The Agency, having previously collaborated on the films Le Mans '66 and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

Fassbender is returning to TV drama for the first time in more than 15 years, following his huge success in films such as Shame, Prometheus and Steve Jobs.

The actor had an early breakout role in the World War II TV drama Band of Brothers and went on to appear in Holby City and Hex before transitioning mostly into film work.

The two-time Academy Award nominee recently wrapped the martial arts comedy film Kung Fury 2, in which he'll share the screen with action icon Arnold Schwarzenegger and Barbie star Alexandra Shipp.

Another project on the horizon for Fassbender is director Steven Soderbergh's mysterious movie Black Bag, also starring Cate Blanchett and Regé-Jean Page.

The Agency will be premiering on Paramount+ later this year.
