Moana Appears More Grown-up in Newly Released Photo from Disney Animated Sequel
‘Moana 2,’ featuring the voices of Dwayne Johnson and Auli'i Cravalho, sails into theaters Nov. 27
Moana is all grown up and on another adventure in Moana 2.
Disney has shared a new glimpse at the anticipated sequel to the 2016 animated movie musical to get fans even more excited.
The newly released shot sees Moana looking slightly more mature while smirking and again brandishing her paddle on a boat, surrounded by water. In the distance behind Moana appears to be a giant sea creature, a lush land mass — or both?

Auli'i Cravalho, 23, is set to return as the voice of the titular character, with Dwayne Johnson, 51, also reprising his role as her friend, the legendary demigod Maui. The sequel will be written and directed by David G. Derrick Jr., who worked as a story artist for the original Moana.
Joining returning composers Opetaia Foa’i and Mark Mancina to create the original songs of Moana 2 are newcomers Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, creators of The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical. Lin-Manuel Miranda, who contributed songwriting to the first installment, is not expected to return.

The Walt Disney Company shared the new image in a post that includes a synopsis for the sequel, calling it an “all-new epic animated musical.”
“Three years since her first voyage, Moana is on an expansive journey in search of people beyond the shores of Motunui,” it reads. “Joined by Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.”
“Moana remains an incredibly popular franchise, and we can’t wait to give you more of Moana and Maui when Moana 2 comes to theaters this November," said Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger in a surprise announcement Feb. 7 that included a brief sneak peek teasing footage from the film.
In addition, Disney has another Moana project in the works; the company previously announced plans for a live-action remake of the original, to be released in 2025. That Thomas Kail-directed movie will include Johnson as Maui, while a yet-to-be-announced new actress will take on the part of Moana. Cravalho is among the film’s executive producers.

In a statement at the time, Cravalho said the princess-chieftess “has had such a profound impact on how we think of Disney princesses. Moana's strength and perseverance are inspiring — to audiences around the world, to me and to everyone who helped bring her to life. I'm looking forward to sharing her story in a whole new way."
Further cast announcements for both Moana 2 and the live-action Moana are still forthcoming. Voicing characters in the 2016 original were Rachel House, Temuera Morrison, Jemaine Clement, Nicole Scherzinger and Alan Tudyk.
Moana 2 will be in theaters Nov. 27.
