Mobile home could be 'loss' from fire

A vacant Nolalu mobile home was partially destroyed by fire early Tuesday as firefighters battled strong winds and contended with motorists who sped past the scene in apparent disregard for safety. Nolalu fire Chief Sarah Shoemaker said when firefighters arrived at the Connolly Road property around 10 a.m., the structure was fully engulfed. No injuries were reported. The home's occupants were not at the property when the fire broke out, Shoemaker said Though about half of the home was still standing by the time the flames had been extinguished, Shoemaker said she doubted it can be repaired. "I think it will end up being seen as a loss," she said. A cause of the blaze hadn't been determined on Tuesday. Shoemaker said Ontario's Office of the Fire Marshal officials will not be attending the scene. Firefighters were still at the property by mid-afternoon on Tuesday making sure the fire was completely out, given the windy conditions, Shoemaker said. Provincial police also attended but referred inquiries to fire officials. Meanwhile, a bulletin from the Nolalu and O'Connor Township fire departments earlier in the day requested passing motorists to be on the lookout for firefighters to ensure their safety. "After three close calls involving vehicles, we are imploring the public to please slow down and take another route if at all possible," the bulletin said. The bulletin advised motorists "to expect delays" as firefighters drew water from a nearby creek to put the fire out.
