The Canada Summer Jobs Program is providing placement for more than 600 young people in Windsor and Tecumseh, Windsor-Tecumseh MP Irek Kusmiercyzk announced Thursday.

Speaking at a launch event at The Bike Kitchen in Windsor, Kusmiercyzk said positions are available to young people ages 15 to 30.

"There are hundreds of organizations across Windsor-Essex that are looking for young people through this program," he said.

"Young people can still apply. Those jobs can begin all the way up to July 22."

Every year the Canada Summer Jobs Program provides 70,000 young people with job experience across Canada.

First job experience for some young people

Kusmiercyzk said the program is made possible locally thanks to some "incredible organizations [and] companies" like Bike Windsor-Essex and Community Living.

Bike Windsor-Essex executive director, Lori Newton, said she's thrilled to once again accept students for the summer.

"Quite frankly, if it wasn't for the five to six students that we received for the summer programs, we wouldn't be able to do what we do," Newton said at the launch.

"We are doing the only cycling education across the region. We're in every municipality in Essex County, teaching kids, teaching adults how to ride bicycles safely, how to repair their bikes, how to keep their bikes in good working condition.

"In The Bike Kitchen, our students not only learn bike mechanics, and that's women and men students… We're really supporting acoustic transportation, although we're excited to see the rise in battery-assist bicycles as well," she added.

Meanwhile, Kusmiercyzk said the summer jobs program will help the young people get their first job experience, as well as the skills, mentorship and networking they require to be successful on their chosen career path.

Young people looking for a summer job are encouraged to apply on jobbank.gc.ca. They can also download the job bank mobile app.
