More rain in Toronto forecast — and the ground can't handle it

Between 20-40 millimetres of rain coming to Toronto, but city says it's 'the intensity' that matters

Rain is in the forecast for Toronto — but the ground can't handle much more wet weather, says Environment Canada.

Rainfall of 15 to 25 millimetres is likely throughout much of southern Ontario, with a 60 per cent chance of showers late Tuesday morning and afternoon in Toronto.

There's also more rain coming Tuesday evening and a risk of thunderstorms overnight.

Thanks to other recent rains and melting snow, the ground has a "reduced ability to absorb further rainfall," says Environment Canada's special weather statement for Toronto.

"Caution is advised near creeks," says the agency. "Ponding of water may occur in some areas as well."

The rain is expected to wrap up on Wednesday, then Toronto needs to brace for another potential round of snow flurries starting on Thursday, with possible rainfall expected on Sunday.
