(Bloomberg) -- The most aggressive Western sanctions imposed on Russia’s oil sector since Moscow’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine threaten to disrupt global supply as buyers — led by China and India — scour the Middle East for alternative suppliers. Some estimates suggest the measures could halve Russian oil exports and their introduction has driven up Brent futures by as much as $5 a barrel in recent days. Most Read from BloombergThese Homes Withstood the LA Fires. Apple recaptured the top spot in China's smartphone market in the fourth quarter, but it fell to third place in 2024 after a year of escalating competition from domestic players, including a resurgent Huawei Technologies. The US tech giant saw smartphone shipments in China plummet 25 per cent to 13.1 million units in the three months through December, down from 17.5 million a year earlier, according to data released by research firm Canalys on Thursday. It narrowly edged out Chinese vendors Vivo
BEIJING (Reuters) -China will launch an investigation into U.S. government subsidies to its semiconductor sector over alleged harm caused to Chinese mature node chipmakers, the commerce ministry said on Thursday. Unlike the cutting-edge chips that power artificial intelligence models, mature node chips are cheaper, easier to manufacture, and used for less complex tasks, including home appliances and communications systems. The investigation is the latest salvo in Beijing's policy of retaliating against Washington's ever-broadening scope of restrictions targeting China's semiconductor industry, which the Biden administration has alleged could go on to dominate global supply chains and help the Chinese military become technologically superior to its U.S. counterpart.
If the Trump administration won't defend the FTC's ban in court, veteran John Roffino plans to step in: "To me, it screams 'supporting capitalism.'"
Chinese start-up Zhipu AI said it "strongly disagrees" with a US decision to add the company and its subsidiaries to an export blacklist, as the administration of President Joe Biden released a flurry of trade restrictions just days before he leaves office. The US Department of Commerce on Wednesday added 25 China-based companies and two Singapore-based firms to its Entity List, accusing them of supporting Beijing's military advance. Blacklisted companies are barred from buying technology from U
Up to 10% of China's oil refining capacity faces closure in the next ten years as an earlier-than-expected peak in Chinese fuel demand crushes margins and Beijing's drive to wring out inefficiency begins to squeeze older and smaller plants. Tighter U.S. sanctions enforcement under the incoming Trump administration could send more plants into the red and accelerate shutdowns by halting access to cheap crude from the likes of Iran, industry players and analysts say. The world's second-largest refining industry has long been plagued by excess capacity after expanding to capitalise on three decades of rapid demand growth.

The Dutch government excludes billions of euros of sales by technology company ASML to China from disclosures on sensitive goods exports, it has told Reuters, following a policy decision that has not been previously reported. The move is of interest because disclosure of exports of "dual use" goods with potential military applications had previously been routine in the Netherlands, and experts who rely on public data to understand states' military capabilities, including parliament, may no longer have the full picture. Computer chip equipment maker ASML itself releases sales data for China - around $7 billion worth in the first nine months of 2024 - but it does not specify the type of machinery it sells by region.
If there's one thing the tech industry has enough of, it's "masculine energy."
Apple was dethroned as China's biggest smartphone seller in 2024, with local rivals Vivo and Huawei overtaking the iPhone maker after its annual shipments in the country declined 17%, data from research firm Canalys showed on Thursday. It was Apple's largest annual smartphone sales decline in China since 2016 and involved contraction in all four quarters, including a 25% drop in the final quarter, according to the data.

U.S. energy firms this week cut the number of oil and natural gas rigs operating for a second week in a row to the lowest since December 2021, energy services firm Baker Hughes said in its closely followed report on Friday. Baker Hughes said this week's decline puts the total rig count down 40 rigs, or 6% below this time last year. Baker Hughes said oil rigs fell by two to 478 this week, their lowest since November, while gas rigs also fell by two to 98, their lowest since September.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg appears to have used YouTube's battle to remove pirated content to defend his own company's use of a dataset containing copyrighted e-books, revealed in newly released snippets of a deposition he gave late last year. The deposition, which was part of a complaint submitted to the court by plaintiffs' attorneys, is related to the AI copyright case Kadrey v. Meta Platforms. For the most part, the defendants in these cases — AI companies — claim that training on copyrighted content is “fair use.”
Chile's Codelco, the world's largest copper producer, is in talks with Saudi Arabia over potential joint investments in the metal, the company's chairman told Reuters in an interview on Friday. On Codelco's output, Chairman Maximo Pacheco said the company's own production for 2025 was expected to rise by about 70,000 metric tons to around 1.4 million tons. Pacheco said the state-owned company had been in discussions with Saudi Arabia as there was a clear need on both sides to add value.

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (Reuters) -Farmers warn Canada's approval of U.S. grain trader Bunge's $34-billion takeover of Glencore-backed Viterra will reduce their options to sell crops at competitive prices, and say the government did not require enough concessions. Canada's approval with conditions on Tuesday was one of the final steps needed to close the largest-ever global agriculture merger by dollar value. Farmers in Canada, the world's top canola producer and No. 3 wheat grower, are struggling with years of drought and low commodity prices.
