The most popular dog breed has been chosen.
On Mar. 20, the American Kennel Club (AKC), the world's largest purebred dog registry, announced America's most popular dog breed for the past year.
According to the nonprofit, the French bulldog is the most popular dog breed for the second consecutive year.
The AKC determines which dog earns the title by reviewing its registration statistics, noting which dog breeds are gaining the most registered members.
The Labrador retriever took the second-place spot. Before the French Bulldog won the most popular position for two years, the Labrador retriever was the AKC's most popular breed for 31 years.
"The French bulldog's surge in popularity shows no signs of slowing down," Gina DiNardo, the AKC's executive secretary, said in a statement. "Their long list of fabulous traits makes them wonderful companions for a variety of people, but that doesn't mean they're for everyone. It's extremely important to do your research to not only find the right breed for your lifestyle but to ensure that you're getting a well-bred dog from a responsible breeder."
Filling out the top ten most popular dog breeds list, from 3 to 10, are the golden retriever, the German shepherd, the poodle, the dachshund, the bulldog, the beagle, the Rottweiler, and the German shorthaired pointer.
While dozens of dog breeds didn't make the top 10, many made moves up the list. The Papillon went from 51 to 45, and the Great Pyrenees jumped from 69 to 64. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is just shy of making the top ten list, currently sitting at 11.
One of the French bulldog's many fans is Martha Stewart. The lifestyle guru, 82, introduced her black French bulldog, Luna Moona, on Instagram.
"She is a fabulous Frenchie with a superb personality," Stewart captioned the Feb. 29 post, calling the pup "the latest addition to the family."
Stewart followed up the introduction with an update. On Monday, she shared a photo of Luna Moona at the vet, letting her followers know the dog was "all good" at her check-up.
