Motorcyclist hospitalized after hitting sign knocked down by dump truck on Hurst highway

A motorcyclist was hospitalized Wednesday morning after hitting a fallen road sign that was knocked down by a dump truck on Loop 820 in Hurst, according to police.

Hurst police officers responded shortly after 3 a.m. to the accident involving the dump truck in the 400 block of northbound Interstate 820. Officers were told that the dump truck was leaving a construction site when the top of the vehicle hit an overhead sign. The impact caused the metal sign to collapse across the highway, creating a road hazard, police said in a news release.

The driver of the dump truck left the scene before police arrived.

Officers used their patrol vehicles to block I-820 and divert traffic to the Pipeline Road exit, police said. But about 3:40 a.m., a motorcycle went around the patrol cars and hit the debris, according to the release.

Officers provided first aid until Hurst Fire Department personnel arrived. The motorcycle driver was taken by ambulance to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth.
