Motorists Witness Volcanic Eruption Near Evacuated Icelandic Town

Motorists driving near Grindavik late on Monday, December 18, witnessed a volcanic eruption from a fissure around 2.5 miles northeast of the evacuated Icelandic town.

Footage recorded by @hrafnar_stonem shows the eruption, which started late on Monday, according to the Icelandic Met Office.

The Met Office said early on Tuesday that lava from the eruption had caused “significant ground deformation” near the fissure, though the intensity of the eruption was weakening.
