Mugging arrest made in Corner Brook

Police in Corner Brook have arrested a woman in connection with a late-night mugging against an elderly woman whose purse was stolen shortly after she won money at a video lottery terminal.

The 82-year-old woman was celebrating her birthday at a local bar and was walking home with her VLT winnings when she was attacked on Broadway, shortly before midnight on Tuesday night.

The woman, who was knocked to the ground during the robbery, was treated in hospital for a fractured arm.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary took a 37-year-old woman into custody on Wednesday. She was being held for an appearance on Thursday in provincial court.

Police did not release details about how the suspect was arrested. The RNC had been canvassing local businesses and were looking for video surveillance that might be useful.
