Camila Cabello, C,XOXO

Camila Cabello's rebrand has arrived. The former Fifth Harmony member's fourth solo studio album C,XOXO features Playboi Carti, Lil Nas X, JT and Yung Miami, and Drake. Writer Steffanee Wang reviewed the album for Teen Vogue, questioning the number of features on the record, given “Cabello has the chops to ostensibly carry a rebrand solo.” All in all, the first project from Cabello's new era is one hell of a rollercoaster ride. (Read the full album review by Wang here.) — K.M.

Jimin feat. Loco, “Smeraldo Garden Marching Band”

BTS member Jimin returns with the first single off his second solo album Muse, out July 19. The track is a fun one — whimsical and upbeat, the result of collaboration between Jimin and producers Pdogg, GHSTLOOP, and EVAN, who called themselves the Smeraldo Garden Marching Band as an inside joke during the creation of Jimin's first solo album. The legend of the Smeraldo flower is also a reference to one of the best, and most melancholy, BTS songs of all time, "The Truth Untold." But this new song is anything but melancholy, as Jimin's high tones swirl around bouncy percussion, marching band horns, and poppy chimes, complemented by South Korean rapper Loco's more matter-of-fact delivery. — P.C.D.

LISA, “Rockstar”

For her first release since departing YG and establishing her own entertainment company LLOUD, Lisa leaned into her “Rockstar” side. Embracing the revival, the track and the music video channel Y2K hip-hop and aesthetics with an edge. Combined with empowering lyrics, this makes for another power anthem, similar to her previous hits “LALISA” and “MONEY.” — D.M.

Megan Thee Stallion, Megan

In the words of her fellow Houstonian Beyoncé, Megan Thee Stallion has officially “transitioned into a new animal.” Megan Thee Stallion is literally hatching in the cover art for her new self-titled album Megan, the culmination of months of reptilian aesthetic changes. The 18-track project is Megan's first under her independent label Hot Girl Productions, her first self-funded album, and her first full-length studio release since her 2022 album Traumazine. From just the first two tracks “HISS” and “Rattle,” it's clear that Megan no longer has anything to prove to anyone. She is competing in an entirely different game. — K.M.

KATSEYE, “Debut”

New global girl group KATSEYE dropped their first single aptly titled “Debut.” Facing much anticipation, the members, who are the winners of the reality competition series The Debut: Dream Academy, answered with confident lyrics, a pure pop sound, and fierce choreography. — D.M.

Omar Rudberg, “Talk”

Former Young Royals star Omar Rudberg is the next pop boy to watch. Rudberg delivers choreography and a scintillating chorus in his new single “Talk,” which arrived with an extra surprise close behind: the fan track “Bye Bye.” Filmed in Stockholm, the music video is a dreamy queer rom-com waiting to happen. Who do we need to call to get this on TV? — K.M.

Amaarae, roses are red, tears are blue — A Fountain Baby Extended Play

After making her runway debut at Vogue World in Paris earlier this month, Ghanaian-American singer Amaarae has returned with roses are red, tears are blue. The new EP functions as a sequel to her critically acclaimed 2023 album Fountain Baby, adding seven brand-new tracks to the album's fierce narrative. — K.M.

Week of June 21

Charli XCX, “The girl, so confusing version with lorde”

If you thought the Charli XCX drops would stop with BRAT and Brat and it's the same but there's three more songs so it's not, you thought wrong. In what's perhaps the curveball of the century, the British star has joined forces with Lorde for a new version of “girl, so confusing.”

“Well, honestly, I was speechless when I woke up to your voice note. You told me how you'd been feeling. Let's work it out on the remix,” Lorde sings in the song. “It's you and me on the coin; the industry loves to spend, and when we put this to bed, the internet will go crazy. I'm glad I know how you feel,” Charli then adds. Well, loud and clear. — S.D.

Ariana Grande feat. Brandy & Monica, “the boy is mine (Remix)”

Almost four months after the release of her seventh studio album, Eternal Sunshine, Ariana Grande is revisiting the project by joining forces with R&B icons Brandy and Monica for a very meta “the boy is mine” remix with subtle references to their original 1998 hit track of the same name. — S.D.

NewJeans, “Supernatural”

Following the release of How Sweet in late May, NewJeans is back with the retro-inspired double single project Supernatural, comprising songs “Supernatural” and “Right Now.” With a distinctive swingbeat aughts flair, “Supernatural” is presented as a collaboration with Pharrell Williams, albeit sans his signature four-count start. The track samples Manami's “Back of My Mind,” interpolating the famed producer's beats, ad-libs, and bridges with a more innocent reinterpretation à la NewJeans with suave and lively choreography to boot.

If “Supernatural” hones in on the tried-and-true formula of nostalgia, "Right Now," featuring creative contributions by French-American R&B artist Lolo Zouaï, goes the opposite route into uncharted territory for the group. The track features a skimpy, fast-paced drum-and-bass genre evoking the breeziness of summer with trilingual lyrics. There's still a timeless tint, but it's way less outwardly referential for NewJeans. — S.D.

RIIZE, “Boom Boom Bass”

After giving fans plenty of musical appetizers over the past few months, RIIZE have finally released their first mini-album, titled RIIZING, with the self-explanatory “Boom Boom Bass." The group has made a reputation for themselves for not sticking to a genre, but with “Boom Boom Bass,” they seem to be going back to the groove of last year's "Get A Guitar." — S.D.

SEVENTEEN's Jeonghan x Wonwoo (JxW), “Last Night”

SEVENTEEN members Jeonghan x Wonwoo have released their first project as a duo with sultry Latin-inspired track “Last Night,” mixing acoustic guitar riffs with disco synths and the duo's wispy voices for an eclectic offering with a 2010s flair. The single album is completed with solo tracks “Beautiful Monster,” a poppy R&B offering by Jeonghan, and the heartfelt ballad “Leftover" by Wonwoo. — S.D.

Coldplay, “feelslikeimfallinginlove"

Coldplay is giving the first taste of their upcoming tenth studio album Moon Music with “feelslikeimfallinginlove," a song they debuted during their tour. Featuring all the trademarks that make a Coldplay song (i.e. anthemic composition, mellow vocals, infectious repetition, and touching lyrics), “feelslikeimfallinginlove" surely will get plenty of love this summer. — S.D.

Kali Uchis, “Never Be Yours”

After being one of her most viral unreleased tracks from 2012, Kali Uchis has finally released “Never Be Yours” officially. Featuring a sample of Delegation's 1978 track "Oh Honey," Kali Uchis's “Never Be Yours” is one for the fans. Now, don't mind me if I quote, "Hello Kitty, why the long face?" 24/7 from now on. — S.D.

Gracie Abrams, The Secret of Us

After releasing the first snippet in early May with “Risk,” Gracie Abrams's new album, The Secret of Us, is here with 13 tracks in total, including a Taylor Swift collaboration. Coincidence? — S.D.

Peso Pluma, Éxodo

After achieving worldwide success, Mexican superstar Peso Pluma has released his fourth studio album Éxodo featuring collaborations aplenty —in fact, only four out of 24 songs credit Pluma alone. In reference to the Bible, Éxodo follows last year's Génesis and continues to tell the story of the star, who traverses different genres in the project while continuing to unapologetically wave the flag for música Mexicana. — S.D.

Ice Spice, “Phat Butt”

Ice Spice has teamed up with producer Riot once again for “Phat Butt,” another short but sweet single from her upcoming Y2K album, which fittingly arrives with a self-directed video tapping into early naughts aesthetics. — S.D.

KAROL G, “Si Antes Te Hubiera Conocido”

In the middle of her Mañana Será Bonito tour, Karol G has released the single “Si Antes Te Hubiera Conocido” as her contender for song of the summer. Featuring romantic confessional lyrics while leaning heavily into merengue music, it's impossible not to dance after a first listen. — S.D.

Jaden Smith, "Roses"

Jaden Smith is back to making music with the suave single “Roses," a romantic offering dancing the lines of alt-indie and bedroom R&B with the crooner's mellow vocals and rap paired with softly arpeggiated guitars as guiding threads. — S.D.

Kehlani, Crash

After much anticipation, Kehlani's fourth studio album, Crash, is finally here. Across the 13 songs in Crash, which includes a collaboration with Jill Scott and Young Miko, the Oakland native is both sensual, vulnerable, and unapologetic, tapping amply into R&B to tell their stories.

The project's lead track, “After Hours," features an unmistakable sample of “Coolie Dance Rhythm,” which most people would recognize from Nina Sky's “Move Ya Body,” signaling this is Kehlani's take on a summer soundtrack. Because one masterful sample doesn't suffice, they follow it up with Christina Aguilera's “What a Girl Wants” in “What I Want.” As they said themselves, Crash is Kehlani as their “most free, most fun, most loud, most fueled so far.” — S.D.

Week of June 14

Normani, Dopamine

After literal years of anticipation, Normani's debut solo studio album is finally here. Featuring 13 songs, including collaborations with Gunna, James Blake, and Cardi B, Dopamine is Normani's passion project, which she is delivering in full at last. — S.D.

Charli XCX, “Spring breakers”

Charli XCX already had us all excited for summer when BRAT released on June 7, but just a couple of days later, she gave us even more with Brat and it's the same but there's three more songs so it's not, a.k.a. the “deluxe” version of the album, featuring the previously teased “Spring breakers," which everyone was up in arms about not being included in the original album, as well as “Hello goodbye” and “Guess.” — S.D.

Nayeon, “ABCD”

Also after much anticipation, TWICE member Nayeon has released her second solo mini album, NA, with title track “ABCD.” Speaking to Teen Vogue in the group's May-June 2024 cover story, Nayeon admitted she tried “a whole new concept for this album.” She added: "It was so much fun working on it…. Unlike the lovely mood presented in ‘Pop!,’ I wanted a more honest and mature side. You'll be able to see a more powerful side of me.” — S.D.

Tove Lo & SG Lewis, HEAT

If you were looking for more summer anthems, Tove Lo and SG Lewis's new EP HEAT has them all. The new project features four songs — “HEAT,” “Let me go OH OH,” “Busy Girl,” and “Desire” — all guaranteed to make you dance the night away with disco infections and pop sensibilities. If you had Torye Sivan's “Rush” on repeat last summer, give HEAT a chance this year. — S.D.

Tayla Parx feat. Tkay Maidza, “Era”

American singer-songwriter and actress Tayla Parx is also committed to making us dance this summer season. The musician has teamed up with Zimbabwean-Australian singer-songwriter and rapper Tkay Maidza for the snappy self-love anthem “Era,” an instant earworm perfect for warmer weather. If you like Doja Cat's poppier R&B releases, this one will be right up your alley. — S.D.

Bree Runway, “Just Like That”

If you are looking for something unapologetic and rowdy, Bree Runway's “Just Like That” is what you are looking for. The London native is not afraid to get noisy on her new single, which features high-fashion rhymes galore with a side dose of distortion to boot. “My first self-funded, independent release of this new era,” the star wrote on X. “A year out of the game, I’ve lost followers, opportunities, money and more, but at least I’ve found ME again!” — S.D.

Khalid, “Adore U”

After some time away from the spotlight, R&B crooner Khalid is back with new single “Adore U.” Featuring suave vocals and sweet lyrics over a snappy R&B base, Khalid might not be reinventing the wheel with “Adore U," but it doesn't make it any less enjoyable. — S.D.

Victoria Monét, “Power of Two”

One thing about Victoria Monét is that she's always going to deliver, even if she's dropping a song for a soundtrack and not a “proper” album. As part of the OST for the new series Star Wars: The Acolyte, Monét has released “Power of Two," a soul-stirring R&B ballad about love and loss. — S.D.

Week of June 7

Sabrina Carpenter, “Please Please Please”

Following the release of her instantly viral hit “Espresso” in April, Sabrina Carpenter has unveiled “Please Please Please,” the second single of her upcoming sixth studio album Short n' Sweet, which will arrive in August.

As a tie-in to “Espresso,” the track arrives with a cinematic music video directed by Bardia Zeinali, for which Carpenter enlisted the help of real-life boyfriend Barry Keoghan. A fresh-out-jail Carpenter immediately falls head-over-heels for Keoghan as he himself gets arrested, only to later begin their crome-filled bandit romance.

In case the synths didn't give it away, the dreamy disco track was written and produced in tandem with Jack Antonoff. Though not as funky as “Espresso,” “Please Please Please" is just as groovy with a small dash of country. — S.D.

Charli XCX, BRAT

Charli XCX has been slowly but surely giving fans snippets of her highly anticipated sixth studio album BRAT and it's finally here. Previously, the English star had released “Von Dutch," “Club classics, "B2b," and “360.” Just days before the album release, she debuted even more songs live at Primavera Sound Barcelona 2024, and now the full 15-track album is here to soundtrack all of your summer party nights. If you need more convincing, the album is racking up rave reviews across the board, with many dubbing it as the best album of 2024 so far — though, you know, they don't build statues of critics and all that. If you live for the drama, there's also some of that hidden in the album… — S.D.

ATARASHII GAKKO!, AG! Calling

Much like Charli XCX, Japanese quartet ATARASHII GAKKO! also debuted a song off their new album, AG! Calling, at Primavera Sound Barcelona 2024. The group chose to unveil the high-octane“Fly High,” which serves as the opener for the 11-track project and arrives with a knock-out music video to boot. AG! Calling also includes previously released and well-received tracks like “Toryanse” and “Tokyo Calling,” as well as “Omakase,” “Forever Sisters,” and “Arigato,” which they debuted at Coachella 2024. — S.D.

TEMS, Born In The Wild

Following the release of “Love Me JeJe” in late April, Nigerian singer-songwriter Tems has released her debut studio album, Born In The Wild, which also includes 2023 single “Me & U.” If you want a mellow album traversing the lines of R&B and soul to listen to on breezy summer evenings, Born In The Wild is the project for you, especially if your ears are tickled by percussion. — S.D.

Raye, “Genesis”

British R&B sensation Raye doesn't play by anyone's rules, and her new self-contained single EP Genesis is the perfect proof. Presented as a three-part, seven-minute song with lyrics inspired by modern-day struggles, “Genesis” sounds at times like a fairy tale, at times like a haunting nightmare, and at times like a burlesque anthem.

Produced in tandem with Grammy-winner Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins (whose name you might recognize from Destiny's Child's “Say My Name” and SZA's “Shirt”), “Genesis” is an ambitious and genre-defying amalgam introducing Raye's biggest swing to date. — S.D.

Kaytranada, Timeless

Canadian producer Kaytranada is back with his third solo studio album, Timeless, which lives up to its name. Featuring 21 songs in total, dived into A-side and B-side just like a classic record, Timeless is guaranteed to make you want to groove and features collaborators galore, including Lou Phelps, Don Toliver, Charlotte Day Wilson, Anderson .Paak and SiR, Channel Tres, Tinashe, Childish Gambino, and PinkPantheress, among many more. — S.D.

Gracie Abrams, “Close To You”

Gracie Abrams has released “Close To You,” the second single off her upcoming album, The Secret of Us, after “Risk" from May. While “Risk” went the acoustic route, “Close To You" kicks things up a notch with disco elements that are more summer-appropriate for a tried-and-true love anthem. — S.D.

Halsey, “The End”

Halsey released the first snippet of their upcoming album with the hauntingly beautiful ballad “The End," which they accompanied with a social post opening about their health struggles, tagging the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the Lupus Research Alliance. It's clear “The End" is ushering in a deeply personal and poignant era for the singer, which will come via their fifth studio album. — S.D.

Kep1er, “Shooting Star”

Kep1er, the girl group formed by reality competition show Girls Planet 999 in 2021, are milking every minute of their time as a nine-group member following the extension of their contract without members Mashiro and Yeseo. The group is kicking off their last joined chapter with “Shooting Star,” a slow-burner summer bop with honeyed vocals, disco-pop synths, and heartfelt lyrics. — S.D.

WayV, “Give Me That (Korean Ver.)”

SM Entertainment's WayV have released their fifth mini album, Give Me That, with a title track of the same name released in both Chinese and Korean. Perfect for summer, “Give Me That” features a snappy drum bass and funk influences galore via trumpet accents coupled with the members' smooth vocals, making for the smoothest of listens. The EP also features “She A Wolf,” “Might As Well (预言),” “New Ride (浪漫公路),” and “Don’t Get Mad.” — S.D.
