Naoya Inoue vs Luis Nery: Date, fight time, undercard, ring walks, latest odds, prediction today

Boxing superstar Naoya Inoue faces his latest test as he fights Luis Nery at the Tokyo Dome on Monday.

It is the first time the iconic Japanese venue has hosted a boxing event since a stunning upset in 1990, when James “Buster” Douglas knocked out the previously undefeated Mike Tyson to become undisputed heavyweight champion.

There will be more than 50,000 fans in attendance when Inoue returns to the ring and they will be hoping there are no shocks when the 31-year-old makes the latest defence of his undisputed super-bantamweight status.

Inoue, arguably the best pound-for-pound fighter in the sport, stopped Marlon Tapales on Boxing Day last year to win the WBA and IBF titles and complete the full set of belts at 122lbs, making it the second division he has become undisputed king in.

The four-weight world champion is 26-0, with 23 of those wins coming by stoppage, and he has not been taken the distance in a fight for more than four years.

Nery (35-1) has previously held world titles at bantamweight and super-bantamweight, with his sole defeat coming three years ago when he was beaten by Brandon Figueroa.

Inoue vs Nery prediction

Tyson’s defeat to Douglas back in 1990 at this very venue should serve as a warning to Inoue that anything can happen in boxing.

There has never been any sign of the Japanese star losing focus, though, and there will surely be no complacency from him as he goes up against a former two-weight world champion.

‘The Monster’ is a truly special fighter and has carried his power up through the divisions, producing superb performances to beat Tapales and Stephen Fulton.

Nery has won both his previous fights in Japan and does possess knockout power himself, but it is difficult to see how he wins. The Mexican cannot expect to out-box Inoue, and turning it into a shootout is unlikely to end well for him either.

It promises to be another thrilling bout involving Inoue, who looks close to unbeatable at 122lbs.

Inoue to win by stoppage, round seven.
