NC State defensive end Davin Vann announces decision for 2024 season

Less than 24 hours after the 2023 season ended, junior defensive end Davin Vann announced he will return to N.C. State.

In a video originally shared by Pack Pride on Friday, the Cary local thanked his teammates, coaches and fans for their support.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better opportunity to play Power Five football right here in my backyard,” Vann said, “I’ve grown so much in the short three years that I’ve been here. All the great memories and experiences that I’ve made during this time, I will never forget. I built brotherhoods that will last a lifetime and bonds with my coaches that go way beyond the field.

“Each and every one of you listening, I would like to say thank you from the bottom of my heart. You fans at Carter-Finley will never be forgotten.”

The somber tone of Vann’s statement implied a decision to leave, but he said — after 10 seconds of instrumental music — “I’m excited to make some more memories next year.”

Vann was one of several athletes who considered entering the NFL Draft and walked on senior day because a decision had not been made.

The All-ACC honorable mention selection ends the season with career highs in tackles (42) and sacks (5.5). Vann also contributed seven tackles for loss and one forced fumble. In the Pop-Tarts Bowl, Vann recorded four tackles and a quarterback hurry.

Before the season, head coach Dave Doeren awarded Vann the No. 1 jersey, noting the junior’s leadership, work ethic and positive habits. Vann’s teammates voted for him as one of the five team captains as well.

It’s unclear whether Vann will receive the No. 1 jersey or captaincy again, but he will be one of the program’s most experienced players, spending his entire career with the Wolfpack. Doeren said there will be about 50 new players next fall.

Vann and N.C. State will take some time off before winter workouts begin in January.
