Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton's 'Bridgerton' Sex Scenes Broke the Furniture on Set

"Hell yeah we did."

Dear reader, you haven't been misled by rumors that the Bridgerton set got so steamy that there was actual damage done to the sets. During an interview with 7News Australia, star Nicola Coughlan, who plays Penelope Featherington, explained that she and her co-star Luke Newton, who plays Colin Bridgerton, broke the furniture while they were filming their sex scenes together.

"Yeah, hell yeah we did," she said before adding that she and Newton "could have a laugh about it."

The laughs also came through their years-long friendship, which made filming together easier, Newton explained.

“It felt like a really safe space,” Newton said. “There were moments where we could explore the scene and try it different ways and that ended up in a piece of furniture getting broken.”

“We just laughed,” he added, saying that he hoped a few of their laughs would make it into the show. "And then, I think Nicola spoke, like in her Irish accent, and I thought, it would have been so special—I mean, maybe it will be in the final cut, us breaking into laughter—because I think that’s quite Colin and Pen, as well. So, it would be nice.”

Earlier this month, Coughlan opened up about filming those scenes during an interview with SiriusXM Hits 1. She explained that she and Newton actually found the intimate scenes to be “really funny” and rather than being "so professional with it," they joked about them.

"We would be in-between scenes, and they were like, ‘Do you wanna get up and put your clothes on?’ We're like, ‘We'll just chill here.’ Like, in under the blankets,” she remembered. “But then we have the advantage of knowing each other for years.”

She added that she “didn’t know what it was gonna be like” to film the sex scenes going into the new season, but “they were actually really enjoyable. I didn't think they would be.”

“It's a little bit like a stunt in which they're like, ‘OK, we're gonna do this, this, and this.’ But then they gave us freedom to like—we had a lot of say in how we did those scenes and what we wanted to do," she said of the process. "And that gives you—that makes you feel quite empowered.”

The new season of Bridgerton will deviate from Julia Quinn’s novel, Romancing Mister Bridgerton—but also incorporate some fan-favorite moments, according to Netflix's trailer. It's set to arrive on the streamer in two parts. The first half of Bridgerton season 3 will premiere on May 16. The second half will premiere on June 13.
