No. 1 Myers Park downs Olympic after fights in stands clear gym: Friday’s boys’ rewind

Friday night’s high school basketball game between conference rivals Myers Park and Olympic only had fans for one quarter.

Game officials demanded the gym be cleared after two altercations broke out in the stands in the first half.

Two sources who were at the game told The Observer that a Myers Park player was undercut while attempting to score, and parents of both players got into a heated shouting match. Both families were sitting on the same side of the gym, behind their teams’ benches.

“That situation got under control pretty quickly,” one source said.

Just after that, a separate fight broke out behind the Olympic bench, the sources said, and officials demanded the gym be cleared before the game could resume.

Myers Park, No. 1 in The Observer’s Sweet 16 and a top 15 team nationally, won easily, 77-32. The Mustangs led 58-8 at halftime and were led by 11 points each from Jacob Paraison, Ashton King and Bishop Boswell. A.J. Jamison added nine points.

Friday’s #BIG5 top performers

Langston Boyd, Mallard Creek: Boyd had a game-high 23 points in a 55-35 win over Hough.

Isaiah Henry, Cannon School: In an 81-59 win over Charlotte Latin, Henry had a game-high 31 points. Cannon, Covenant Day and Providence Day ended up in a first-place tie for the CISAA conference title.

Jack Hudson, Corvian Community: In a 68-43 win over Pine Lake Prep, Hudson had 11 points, 13 rebounds, four assists and two blocks.

Trey Maxwell, North Mecklenburg: Maxwell had a game-high 27 points, making five 3-point shots, in an 83-71 come-from-behind win at Chambers.

Christian Virgilio, Lake Norman Charter: On Senior Night, Virgilio scored a career-high 22 points in a 75-48 win over South Rowan.

No. 2 North Meck survives scare at Chambers

North Meck won the Queen City conference championship with Friday’s 83-71 win over Chambers. But the Cougars really made the nationally ranked Vikings work.

North Meck led by two points heading into the fourth quarter before outscoring the Cougars 27-17 in the fourth.

“This is what you expect when you play over here,” Vikings coach Duane Lewis said after the game. “Sold out like it is every year. It was just two great teams going at one another.”

That crowd got really loud when Chambers got the lead in the third quarter, threatening to become the first N.C. team to beat North Mecklenburg this season.

“We talked about it the first time we played them and now,” Lewis said. “It’s a game of runs. We controlled most of the first half, but they came out and punched us in the mouth. We settled back in. It’s always great to get a win around here.”

The Vikings were led by 27 points from senior guard Trey Maxwell, who made five 3-point shots. McDonald’s All-American Isaiah Evans had 22 points for North. Markus Kerr, a sophomore, led Chambers with 15 points.

“The team looks at me for energy,” Maxwell said. “I’m the energy guy on the floor for the team. I go after rebounds. I’m all over the place.”.

Cannon wins CISAA title again

Cannon School beat Charlotte Latin 81-59 Friday to win the CISAA league title for the fourth time in five years. The Cougars will share the crown with Covenant Day and Providence Day.

All three teams finished 8-2 in league play.

The N.C. Independent Schools state tournament begins next week, and pairings are expected to be announced Sunday.

Concord Academy wins MAC title

Concord Academy beat Gaston Day, 64-61, in overtime to win the Metrolina Athletic conference tournament championship Friday.

Concord Academy won the regular-season title and repeated as tournament champions. Friday, Jake Benham and Indiana State signee Sean Birmingham combined for 32 points.
