No one injured after early morning fire damages North York house

No one was injured after an early morning fire in North York on Saturday but the blaze extensively damaged a house.

The fire on McKee Avenue in the area of Bayview Avenue and Finch Avenue East was reported at about 3:38 a.m. The bulk of the fire was extinguished by 5:01 a.m.

Michael Westwood, a captain with Toronto Fire Services, said heavy flames and smoke were coming out from the back of the house when firefighters arrived.

"The occupants of the house were able to get out safely," he said. "Nobody was injured."

Sixty firefighters, along with 16 fire trucks, responded to the fire.

Westwood said the damage to the house was extensive but he could not pinpoint which part of the house was affected.

Firefighters were still at the scene at 10 a.m. to put out hot spots.

Ontario's Office of the Fire Marshal has been called, he said.

Const. Allyson Douglas-Cook, spokesperson for the Toronto police, said the occupants of the house have made arrangements to stay with extended family members.

McKee Avenue, from Highgate to Estelle Avenues, was closed but has since been reopened.
