Two of the films to watch for multiple nominations include Roma and Black Panther — directed by Alfonso Cuaron and Ryan Coogler, respectively.

Superhero flick Black Panther was a crowd pleaser, to say the least, earning star Letitia Wright the title of highest-earning actress at the box office for 2018.

Movie reviewers raved about Roma, the dreamy black-and-white memoir set in 1971 and shot in Mexico City, now on Netflix.

Variety predicted late last week that Roma and Bradley Cooper's remake A Star is Born are set to lead the Oscar nomimations.

Black Panther was shortlisted in the original song category for All the Stars, which is also in the running for a Grammy as song of the year. The film was also on the Oscar shortlist for winning in visual effects, as well as the makeup and hairstyling category.

To maintain a level of secrecy, the shortlists released by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences left out top categories, for best film, direction and performances.

But much of the buzz has been about crowd-pleasers. Reviewers have been predicting big things for A Star is Born, the drama-comedy Green Book, and even the concert film and biopic Bohemian Rhapsody.

Bao, the Canadian effort from Pixar, appeared on the shortlist in the animated short film category. Bao features the life of an ultra-cute dumpling that comes to life.
