North East School Division prepares for 2024 elections

NORTHEAST - On Nov.13, elections for school boards in Saskatchewan will be occurring. The North East School Division is preparing for new online and electronic voting.

At the last board meeting, the NESD approved Tanya Biesenthal as Returning Officer for the 2024 general election

The City of Melfort will be running their municipal elections at the same time for municipal government and will administer the voting for the school division election for the electors in the city.

The city uses electronic vote counting equipment and offers mail-in ballots and homebound voting. The NESD requires the board to approve motions for electronic voting equipment, mail-in ballots and homebound voting.

The board approved to pay election officials at the same rate as the municipality when working with a municipality and when coordination does not occur, then the default rate is the Election Saskatchewan rate for 2024. Anyone looking to run for a school board will be required to provide a Criminal Record Check along with their nomination form as permitted by Section 87(1)(aa.2) of The Education Act, 1995.

The board also approved the use of homebound and mail-in voting for the 2024 general election of the school board for the North East School Division No. 200 in the City of Melfort, as administered by the City of Melfort.

Lair said the first call for nomination is Sept. 24. The Nomination Day is Oct. 9 with a 4 p.m. deadline. The notices are posted as per the elections act and information packages will be shared on the NESD website, however they are not posted until September, said Lair.
