New North Korean Resort Ready to Welcome Guests After Construction Delays, Reports Say

A beach resort on the east coast of North Korea prepared to open to tourists after several years of construction delays, local media reported on Wednesday, June 12.

Satellite imagery, collected by Planet Labs between May 1 and June 12, shows the sprawling resort in Wonsan Kalma Coastal Tourist Area, on the eastern side of the Korean Peninsula in Kangwon Province.

According to Korean outlet NK Pro, construction on the resort started in 2018 and appeared “mostly finished” in early 2020, but the pandemic “complicated plans for opening.”

The new resort has only hosted tourists once – a group of Russians and media crews in February this year – to preview the facilities. Russian tour companies have been told the resort is nearing completion but have not received details about a full opening and access to actual overnight stays, according to NK Pro.
