North Texas movie theaters

The free movie tickets may be a relief to film fans after a tough few weeks for North Texas cinema.

Earlier this month, all five Alamo Drafthouse Cinema locations in North Texas closed. The closures shocked many cinema lovers in Dallas-Fort Worth, along with Alamo’s hundreds of local employees, who were unaware the closures were coming.

The closures stem from Two is One, One is None, LLC filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. The company is a franchisee of Austin-based Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. The five closed theaters were spread across the Metroplex, with one in Richardson, one in Denton, one in Irving and two in Dallas.

Nearly a week after the closure news, Sony Pictures Entertainment purchased the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema theater chain. The movie studio now owns 35 theater locations across the country, with a majority of them in the Lone Star State.

In the wake of the acquisition, Sony is working to get the Dallas-Fort Worth area Alamo theaters back up and running, a company insider told the Star-Telegram. Meanwhile, the North Texas closures do not impact existing operations and Sony’s plans for growth remain unchanged.

In addition to the Alamo closures, Angelika Film Center’s Plano location closed on June 6 after 20 years in business.
